Communautique, SDC District Central and their partners Concertation Montréal and mmode, the Metropolitan Fashion Cluster, invite you to a day of codesign to imagine together the future of the textile and fashion industry in Montreal. A collaborative day to build together the Fab City Montréal, a locally productive and globally connected metropolis, which stands out in the textile and fashion industry through innovation and ecological and social responsibility.

When? Full day or a la carte, Friday March 25, 2022, from 8 am to 5 pm.
Where? Online codesign, tomorrow’s prototype workshop at échofab, Communautique’s Fab Lab in District Central, and webcast.

]]> Quelle merveilleuse soirée ce fut!

Un immense bravo à vous tous qui y avez contribué, de près ou de loin. Nous avons été épatés par la diverstié de nos visiteurs et de leur enthousiasme envers les différentes facettes de notre laboratoire numérique si humain.

L’idée de tenir une telle soirée a été semée par Pascale Malaterre en mars 2012. Nous tenons à la remercier pour le travail investi dans toute cette entreprise. Il va sans dire qu’il y a d’incalculables efforts qui ont été mis à la conception et l’élaboration de cette soirée.

À vous tous, sans qui cette soirée aurait été impossible, merci!

L’équipe de Mosaïc Manufacturing a passé la soirée avec la communauté pour faire une démonstration de ce nouvel équipement qui démocratise la couleur pour toutes les imprimantes 3D.

]]> Après une tournée des clubs étudiants de l’ÉTS pour annoncer l’événement, une séance d’information s’est tenue dans le hall du pavillon A, le mercredi 6 mai, sur l’heure du diner. Une présentation sur les Fab Labs et échoFab et un worldcafé ont permis une récolte des besoins de la communauté. Également, un groupe d’une quinzaine d’étudiants se sont rendus de facto à échoFab pour découvrir ce lieu ouvert à la communauté de l’ÉTS 3 jours semaines en plus des journées publiques.

Les fonctions sociales à L’ÉTS ont été cartographiées par les participants : DÉCLIQ, clubs étudiants, événements, expositions, services aux étudiants, projet Découverte, Pub des 100génies dont les profits sont versés à l’association étudiante, GéniAle, École d’innovation citoyenne, conception vidéos, sorties plein air, piques-niques, 24 heures de l’innovation, Summer School, Substance, Espace 3C…

Des besoins exprimés nous retenons le besoin d’encourager la créativité, des initiatives personnelles et artistiques, un lieu pour développer ses relations personnelles. échoFab, c’est un autre but que les clubs étudiants et l’académique, et ça démocratise la technologie!

]]> It is time the final piece should be taking shape. The last few days, I worked on the sketches I made in day 9. I combined some of the elements from different rapid sketches. I composited this and then took it to the laser printer to get etched and cut. This will be the edge lit element of the art-piece that will represent ‘fluidity’ and movement.

The photo below shows the final design ready to be etched. The video shows etch itself onto the clear plastic acrylic. I am pleased with the result so far. It won’t look so much like a snowboard design when it is in the final piece, I hope!

]]> Today was a day to spend away from the workshop. I wanted to get inspiration for the ‘fluid’ composition that will be etched onto the perspex element of the final artwork using the laser cutter. As the fluid lines are to evoke the movement in the city, I decided to spend some time walking around outside the apartment I am staying at the moment. I took some photos, sketched. I will use this outside stimulus to make many drawings in quick succession of one another on a bit sketchpad. This is a process I often use. I then go back through all the sketches and carefully choose which composition is the most fluid and spontaneous.

I also tried to brainstorm how the interactive elements of the Arduino will work, both the programming and the hardware setup. I have little experience with the Arduino so far and getting it to work will be a very interesting challenge! It is late at night now and as I write this, I have just finished the shape of the ‘cloud’ element to something that I am pleased with. Tomorrow, I will attempt to get at least a rough version of it laser cut so I can construct a trial shape of it over the long Easter weekend.

]]> Today a development video. Some photos of the shapes and lights I am playing with. In the video you see the form that I have evolved. For me, evolving a form is only finished when the art-piece is over. I have developed the overall shape I want in 3ds Max as in the video but this shape will change as I construct it in real life.

Also, in one of the photos you can see that one of the legs when printing the ant broke off. The reason for this was that this leg was not attached to the base option that the print preparation Cura creates before a print. The solution to this was to go back to the model in 3dsMax and make a thin flat base on the model there making sure that all legs are attached to it. Tomorrow, will tell what will happen with the evolution of the work!…
